Jon’s Bistro at Bre-Pen Farm, Mawgan Porth
Lee Trewhela unveils a hidden, culinary gem in the heart of Cornwall
I ALMOST feel guilty about writing this as I’m about to uncover what for many people is one of Cornwall’s hidden gems.
For Jon’s Bistro – tucked away and unassuming on a farm near Mawgan Porth – is very special indeed, though you would be forgiven for not expecting too much when you arrive. With just 18 covers and using Bre-Pen’s farm shop as its dining room on Thursday to Saturday evenings in summer (Friday and Saturday off-peak), Jon’s Bistro isn’t exactly ritzy.
But frankly at just £20 for three courses – which I have to say are exceptional – who gives a toss about chic surrounds?
This is all about top-notch food, using local produce (much of it grown on site) in a relaxed atmosphere on a charming rural site. So relaxed, in fact,
that surfers rub shoulders with families, who dine next to retired couples.
It’s all the more remarkable given that just two people are responsible for all the cooking, front of house, serving, management, dish washing, etc.
Jon Harvey is the culinary mastermind while wife Jen is your charming host.
Jon gained his professional chef diploma in 2004 from Westminster College. As part of his course he worked in top London restaurants including Claridges and the Hilton Metropole.
